"Textural Rhythms" coming to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

The art of quilt making has a story. The art of jazz has a story. When two such ageless arts converge, a novel of patterns, sounds, and colour is written, giving us a closer look into the creative and expressive African American culture. The preservation of all art is important, but quilting and jazz are particularly crucial, as it offers our youth a portal to an earlier time; an opportunity to understand the profound affect these arts have on pop culture today as a whole. Additionally, an appreciation for the pioneers of quilting and jazz, and the deep-rooted inspiration for their craft. None of it was created for money, fame, or recognition. Instead, it was a form of communication, a genuine expression of life.

From June 15th to August 14th, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host Textural Rhythms: Constructing the Jazz Tradition. Textural Rhythms is a showcase of jazz–inspired African American quilts, presented by Curator Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. Visit the Freedom Center to personally experience the collaborative energy of colour and rhythm, expressed with love from the heart and soul. Discover the stories behind the quilts, and how they relate to jazz and life.
