A Summer Guide to Live Jazz - What an idea!
MassJazz (http://www.massjazz.com/) is an organization that promotes Jazz, on a statewide level, throughout Massachusetts. Their website covers events, venues, community support information, and scheduled jazz festivals throughout the state. A very informative and thorough medium for residents and visitors alike.
While visiting this site made me feel very happy and hopeful, what REALLY brought a smile to my face was the second I laid my eyes upon their MassJazz Travel Guide for Summer & Fall 2010. Let me tell you, the people at MassJazz have it all figured out.
The MassJazz Travel Guide is a special recipe with all the seasonings that would make a jazz lover’s stomach growl and mouth water. The guide corrals all jazz music events, concerts, and festivals from July through October. It also contains resources for Jazz education, radio programs, as well as a run-through of restaurants, nightclubs, and other venues that feature live jazz on a regular basis.
And guess what? It doesn’t stop there. All the state’s jazz organizations, promoters, and bloggers work together to contribute and share their love of America’s art form, resulting in a cultivating and increased visibility for the music, as well as a fixture in the artistic contribution to the state’s image.
Now think about it: after hearing all the things this guide contains, how would you, as a jazz enthusiast, like to visit a state (possibly one you’ve never visited before), ask someone where can you find live jazz, to have them respond by placing one of these guides in your hands and say, “Have fun”?
Our beloved Queen City may not have large-scale, recurring jazz festivals (although I remain hopeful), but there are many jazz events that take place here. What if we had a sort of “Cincinnati Summer Jazz Guide”, highlighting these events – not only the performances, but the musicians, the venues, and jazz promoters and organizations as well? Considering these various entities, it wouldn’t take much to compose such a guide. Think about the presence Cincinnati Jazz could have in the eyes of the community, as a “united front”. Think about the impression our city could have on the Midwest region, stepping up as a major player for hosting live jazz shows.
